The famous wall-enclosed Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot vineyard, which is also the largest in terms of a single appellation in the Côte de Nuits region in Burgundy, has been cultivated for over 900 years, close to the streams of River Vouge, which separates this distinctive vineyard from its neighbouring Chambolle-Musigny viticulture areas.
Sylvain Loichet’s vines are approximately seventy years old, situated in the far south, towards Vosne-Romanée, half-way up the wall-enclosed Clos, on deep, stony, clay soil.
An excellent accompaniment to a wonderful pot of Boeuf Bourguignon (beef stew made with Charolais Beef from Burgundy) or some fat, juicy Chinese Roasted Peking Duck, this Clos de Vougeot exhibits wonderful aromas of red and dark berries, with velvety, silky tannins, intense dark fruit flavours and a medium-plus to long finish on the palate. A cellar-worthy Grand Cru which can be enjoyed in its youth but will be even more amazing if you can keep your hands off the bottle.
The young and talented Sylvain Loichet took over his grandparents’ vines and established the domain in 2004, gradually increasing and diversifying the family’s land holding to the 8 hectares they own today, spread across different appellations of Chorey-Les-Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesse, Ladoix, Comblanchien, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Clos de Vougeot.
All the grapes are hand-harvested and undergo cold maceration before fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts in the winery. New and used French barriques are carefully selected for maturation and aging in the cold cellars for up to two years. The wine is filled by gravity with no fining or filtration.
Good wines are born with great, healthy grapes. And Sylvain’s philosophy towards winegrowing reflects that with a minimalist and organic approach in the vineyards and winery to allow the purity and character of the place, or terroir, to shine through each drop of wine made.
